Digital Cocaine: The Business Model of AI Addiction, When the Savior Becomes the Dictator

In the social and economic history of addictive commodities, few business models have been as ruthlessly effective as that of the drug baron. The strategy is simple: introduce the substance freely, normalize its use, cultivate dependence, and only then begin to extract profit from the addiction. What begins as a gift gradually becomes a necessity, and what becomes a necessity soon commands any price the addict is willing or forced to pay.

A strikingly similar pattern appears to be unfolding in the digital age with the proliferation of artificial intelligence tools.

When artificial intelligence systems were first introduced to the public around 2022, they were celebrated as revolutionary assistants, tools designed to augment human productivity, creativity, and efficiency. The early versions were freely accessible or offered generous trial capabilities. Students used them to summarize readings; professionals used them to draft emails; programmers relied on them to debug code. The public welcomed these tools with enthusiasm, regarding them as the next great step in technological progress.

Yet by 2026, the situation has evolved in ways that invite deeper reflection.

The phrase now frequently heard across industries is: “To get the best out of AI, the free version is not enough.” Access to advanced capabilities increasingly requires subscription models, premium tiers, and enterprise licenses. What began as a complimentary tool is gradually transforming into an indispensable service for which individuals and institutions must pay.

The deeper concern, however, is not merely economic. It is cognitive.

Across boardrooms, laboratories, classrooms, and studios, one notices a subtle but consequential shift in intellectual behavior. Executives consult AI tools before drafting strategy memos. Academics rely on them to refine arguments. Professionals increasingly turn to them for language construction and analytical framing. If highly trained individuals now hesitate to construct a paragraph without algorithmic assistance, one must ask what this implies for undergraduate and postgraduate students whose intellectual habits are still forming.

Dependence, once established, quietly reshapes human capability.

Artificial intelligence performs astonishingly well. It answers questions instantly, synthesizes vast knowledge across disciplines, reviews arguments with near-academic precision, and presents conclusions with the authority of a seasoned judge. In many ways, it resembles the polymath ideal once reserved for the rarest human intellects: a system capable of traversing law, medicine, philosophy, engineering, literature, and psychology within seconds.

It counsels like a mentor, explains like a professor, and responds like an oracle.

But therein lies the paradox. The more reliable the machine becomes, the less incentive there is for the human mind to struggle through the slow and often uncomfortable process of thinking. Critical reasoning, analytical patience, and intellectual resilience, the very traits that have driven human progress for centuries, risk gradual erosion when outsourced to automated systems.

Economic behavior further illustrates the growing dependence. Individuals now allocate portions of their income not only to traditional necessities, food, housing, and transportation, but also to AI subscriptions. These range from modest monthly fees of a few dollars to enterprise-level services costing tens of thousands annually. What once belonged to the category of optional software is quickly moving toward the status of essential infrastructure.

From a business perspective, the developers of these systems have succeeded brilliantly. They have created products that are not merely useful but habit-forming. The more one uses them, the harder it becomes to stop.

Yet the broader question concerns the course of human civilization.

If the current path continues toward increasingly powerful systems, perhaps culminating in superintelligent artificial agents, the implications could be profound. The philosophical idea known as technological singularity imagines a moment when machine intelligence surpasses human intelligence in most domains. Whether that moment arrives in decades or centuries remains uncertain, but the cultural groundwork for dependence is already visible.

Even more concerning is the attitude of the coming generation. Many young users approach AI tools not merely as instruments but as authorities-quasi-oracular systems whose answers are rarely questioned. In such an environment, intellectual humility may quietly transform into intellectual surrender.

Human beings risk trading the discipline of thinking for the convenience of answers.

Ironically, the technology that appears to empower humanity could also weaken the very faculties that made its creation possible. The savior of productivity might gradually assume the posture of a silent dictator over human cognition.

History offers a recurring lesson: every revolutionary invention eventually demands renegotiation between convenience and control. The printing press, electricity, the internet, all reshaped society in ways both liberating and destabilizing. Artificial intelligence may prove to be the most powerful of them all.

Therefore, the question before us is not whether AI tools should exist, they already do, and their benefits are undeniable. Rather, the urgent question is how humanity should use them without surrendering the intellectual independence that defines our species.

Tools should extend human capacity, not replace it. If we fail to maintain that boundary, the future may not be one in which humans command intelligent machines, but one in which humans quietly forget how to think without them.

The time has come, therefore, to pause and reconsider our relationship with artificial intelligence, not with fear or rejection, but with deliberate restraint and thoughtful responsibility.
